Originally created for use in Thomas and Friends’ sister show TUGS, the stone workmen’s shelter props have lived quite a fascinating life. My goal for this project was to accurately replicate the models seen on screen using CAD design and 3D printing, striving to improve on one of my earliest building designs. Ultimately I could not be happier with how both of my new models turned out and I find great pride in my progress in modelmaking when comparing one of them to its predecessor!

My CAD design of the structure

Each four walls were printed and assembled

Next was the roof pieces. Using an X-acto knife, I cut down excess printer filament and made sure the 3D printed roofs fit snuggly into the structure

Then I spray painted the model grey, hand painted the door, and weathered the structure

All that was left after that was a final layer of matte varnish. Hurrah!
